Description:

Two accidents involving small commercial planes near Katmai National Park and Preserve that resulted in minor injuries have been reported within a couple days of each other. On Sunday, a deHavilland Beaver floatplane leased to the Katmai-based Royal Wolf Lodge failed to get airborne and crashed into Kukaklek Lake south of Iliamna. Several passengers suffered minor injuries and the pilot was treated in an Anchorage hospital, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. On Tuesday evening, a Cessna 206 floatplane operated by Anchorage-based Rust's Flying Service lost engine power after a trip to the Brooks Falls area, a popular bear-viewing spot in Katmai. The pilot was able to touch down on land about 15 miles west-southwest of Iliamna but the plane rolled over. One of five passengers had a superficial cut and was treated at an Anchorage hospital, according to the NTSB. NTSB investigator Larry Lewis said that the Katmai area receives a lot of flight tour traffic in the summer months. "I'd suspect that you see more incidents because there are more people going down there," he said. The Alaska National Guard had planned to rescue the six people left stranded near Iliamna on Tuesday evening but a spokesman for the agency said that "good Samaritans" arrived to pick them up before it was able to launch a helicopter. Rust's Flying Service did not immediately return a call for comment on Wednesday.

People board up the windows of their home in preparation for the arrival of Hurricane Alex, the first Atlantic hurricane of the year, in La Carbonera, northeastern Mexico, Wednesday June 30, 2010. Currently a Category 1 hurricane, Alex could upgrade to Category 2, with winds of at least 96 mph (154 kph), when it makes landfall Wednesday evening or early Thursday about 100 miles (160 kilometers) south of Matamoros, Mexico, and Brownsville, Texas, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. (AP Photo/Eduardo Verdugo)AP - The first Atlantic hurricane of the year grew to a powerful Category 2 storm as it neared Mexico's Gulf coast and south Texas on Wednesday, whipping up high waves that frustrated oil-spill cleanup efforts and delivering tar balls and globs of crude onto already soiled beaches.
