April 30, 2010 on 9:08 pm | In Volcanoes | Comments Off Ten earthquakes between magnitude M=1.0 and M=2.1 occurred in the Long Valley region since the last update on April 23, 2010. Two of these occurred under Mammoth Mountain and three were located inside Long Valley caldera (south moat). The others were located to the south of the caldera in the Sierra Nevada (three) and Round Valley (one). Several earthquakes below magnitude 1.0 were also detected. This level of activity is considered normal for the area.

 COORDINATES -  60.4 NORTH  177.7 WEST
 DEPTH       -   20 KM
 LOCATION    -  BERING SEA
 MAGNITUDE   -  6.6

EVALUATION

 THIS EARTHQUAKE IS LOCATED OUTSIDE THE PACIFIC. NO TSUNAMI THREAT
 EXISTS TO COASTLINES IN THE PACIFIC.

 HOWEVER - EARTHQUAKES OF THIS SIZE SOMETIMES GENERATE LOCAL
 TSUNAMIS THAT CAN BE DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS LOCATED WITHIN
 A FEW HUNDRED KILOMETERS OF THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER. AUTHORITIES
 IN THE REGION OF THE EPICENTER SHOULD BE AWARE OF THIS
 POSSIBILITY AND TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION.

 THIS CENTER MONITORS ONLY A LIMITED NUMBER OF SEA LEVEL GAUGES
 OUTSIDE THE PACIFIC SO IT MAY NOT BE ABLE TO QUICKLY DETECT OR
 MEASURE A TSUNAMI IF ONE WAS GENERATED. AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME
 THE DANGER HAS PASSED IF NO TSUNAMI WAVES ARE OBSERVED NEAR THE
 EPICENTER WITHIN AN HOUR OF THE EARTHQUAKE.

THIS WILL BE THE ONLY BULLETIN ISSUED FOR THIS EVENT UNLESS
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION BECOMES AVAILABLE.
